Jobs for a 14 year old to pay for horse riding lessons?

Posted on 15 September 2009 at 4:10 pm in Horse Riding Lessons.

I’ve always had some sort of desire to ride horses and they are one of my favourite animals. The thing is, my parents could never afford to pay for them, as I have already have piano and singing lessons. Is there any way I could earn the money to pay for them myself?

Maybe you can make a trade with the stable. Clean stalls in exchange for lessons and riding privileges.

Most stables are more than happy to hire "volunteers." If you talk with the stable you’d like to ride with, they would probably go out of their way to help you out. I know from personal experiences that most stables could ALWAYS use more people to muck out stalls (cleaning up after the horses), or someone to help them feed twice a day. If you offer your services, or ask where your services are needed, I’m almost sure that the stable owners will cut some kind of deal with you for your labor. If you show that you are responsible, they will probably provide you with free lessons or at least a reduced price. When talking to the stable owners, just ask what kind of deal you get.
Hope this helps if anything. Good luck with riding lessons!

Most stables that have lesson programs will let you muck out stalls and do other barn chores in exchange for lessons. Call a local or nearby barn and ask it they would be willing to do this. Odds are they will say yes, as you can never have enough people working in the barn.

Most stables will hire you to work for free lessons. That’s my job, in fact =D Most of the work involves filling haynets; grooming, tacking, catching, rugging and handling the horses; dealing with clients (booking lessons in); making feeds; leading little kids in the novice lessons and general yard managment. They should be happy to teach you as you go along, but from my experience, it is horrible to try to teach someone to work with horses when they think they know everything and don’t want to do the smaller jobs.

Show up at the stables and simply ask if you could work there and what jobs you would be needed to do etc. Present yourself as best as possible to work with horses (nobody wants a too shy, nervous and unsure person handling a 1000lb animal – or a too loud and show-off sort of person that’s annoying and can’t concentrate on the job)

You should love it, and it’s really good experience with horses. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you don’t know what to do, it’s better for everyone than just guessing. Sometimes I have to ask about what fly cream to use on a horse and stuff like that.

    Good luck.=)
